Life ECU Data
Over the winter, I purchased an SR3RS. I was able to download the data file. However, for some reason, there is no logged data in the file. The Engine Run Time, Engine On-Load Time, etc. all show zero. Has anyone had this experience or have any idea why this would happen?
Hi Chris (@cwrega), Welcome to the Registry and congratulations on getting your RS! This issue is caused when the battery inside the Life ECU dies. When you look at the top of the log book file that you downloaded from the ECU you should see "No RTC" which is short for "No Real Time Clock" which is indicating that the ECU battery has died and that the data in the ECU is no longer accurate. The ECU battery only charges when the engine is running, so if the car sits for several months without being run the ECU battery often dies. This happens even if the two car batteries have been on trickle chargers. Sometimes when this happens people start using the car again and the battery partially recharges and starts storing data again, however, the data is only recorded from the last time the battery was charged. And if the battery dies again (or it won't hold a charge) the data will go to zero again.
The battery in the Life ECU is not designed to be changed by the user and it is recommended to send the ECU back to Life Racing to have the battery replaced. It is my understanding that Life modifies the circuit when they replace the battery to reduce the likelihood of the battery failing again. I hope this helps.
@charleyhradicalsportscarregistry-com thank you for the detailed response...and for all of the amazing support I have found on the forum.
I don't see the No RTC message in the log file. Here is a screenshot. Am I looking at the wrong thing? Or could that mean that there is a different issue?
@cwrega The "NoRTC" is highlighted in blue at the very top of your screenshot. Charley is dead on about the battery. I had mine replaced after it died but I know others just use the Aim Studio 3 software to pull much of the same data that you get out of Life Data. That doesn't do you any good to see historical data if all the Aim data has been deleted, however.
Damn that couldn't have been more obvious!!! Thanks for pointing it out. I sent a message to Life Racing to ask about the replacement.
With the MXS dash, I think I have to use Race Studio 2. Not sure I have seen the capability to log run hours with it. Though I honestly find both the Life and the AIM software incredibly confusing.
