How to Adjust / Remove an SR3 / SR8 Seat.

Seat Adjustment

The seats in the SR3 have a range of movement of about 1.25” to the front or back.  The seat is fastened to the chassis in six points.  There are 13mm bolt / Nuts at shoulder level on each side of the seats.  There are 4 mm Allen head fasteners with 10 mm nuts at hip level on each side of the seat.  And there are 5 mm Allen head fasteners at the front of the seat that attach to sliders on the floor of the car. 

 

To adjust the seat forward or back, you loosen all six fasteners and slide the seat into the desired position and then re-tighten the fasteners.

Seat Removal

Here are the steps required to remove the seat in an SR3 RS:

 1) Remove the two angled cross bars that support the main Roll hoop.

    • Remove the plastic caps on each end of the cross bar by carefully inserting a flat blade screwdriver and rotating / prying.
    • Remove the two 8 mm Allen head bolts that are located underneath the plastic caps on each end of the cross bar.
    • Pull up on the bottom / forward end of the cross bar. Once it is free of the bodywork move it forward to free the rear side of the bar.
    • Note: when reinstalling the fasteners during the reassembly process it is a good idea to put some anti-seize compound on the threads of the bolts before reinstalling.

2) Remove the two fasteners that attach the seat to the front track.

    • This is done with a 5 mm Allen head socket and an extension.

3) Remove the two fasteners that are at hip level

    • This is done by using a 4 mm Allen wrench or socket on the head of the fastener and a 10mm wrench holding the nut on the outboard side of the seat.

4) Remove the two nuts/washers that hold the seat in place at shoulder level.

    • These fasteners look like they are nuts on a stud molded into the seat but they are actually a bolt going through a threaded fitting in the seat. To loosen the nuts, it is not necessary to hold a wrench on the bolt head under the seat.
    • Remove the nuts from the bolts.
    • Pull the mounting tab outboard to allow the seat to be move upward.
    • Once the seat has been moved to clear the mounting tabs it is a good idea to put a socket or wrench on the bolt head on the inboard side of the seat and rotate the fastener so it no longer protrudes from the seat. This prevents it from scraping the car when the seat is being removed.
    • Note: when reassembling the seat, it is a good idea to snug the bolt down into the fitting so that you don’t need to put a wrench on the bolt head when reinstalling the nut. This should be done after the seat has been placed in position and just prior to final placement of the seat.

5) Clear or remove the Seat belt anti-submarining straps.

    • Some of the anti-submarining are thin enough to slip through the slot in the seat, while others require unbolting the anti-submarining straps from the chassis. This is done by rotating the seat forward enough to gain access to the bolts attaching the anti-submarining straps to the chassis.

6) Remove the seat

    • Rotate the seat forward while lifting the seat up. It is helpful to have a second person for this step of the process.  The seat is a tight fit, but it does have enough clearance to come out.

7) To install the seat simply reverse the order.

Thanks Charley for the great write-up, do you happen to know the torque specs for the roll bar supports?
