Hi Everyone,

New member contemplating getting a used Radical.

I used to race a CR500 (primarily GNCC).  Have been tracking (HPDE) a C5 Corvette Since 2000 (WGI, Summit Point, VIR).  Its slowly morphed into a modified track only car.  Also endurance race in ChampCar (Sebring and Daytona, not in the C5).

Last year I did a couple of days in an SRF3 with SADEV gearbox.  Was a complete blast.  Definitely a momentum car with confidence inspiring handling.  Couldn't believe the cars that struggled to keep up.  Immediately thought about getting one but only if I could do an engine swap for more power.  That got me thinking about a Radical.

I have a lot of reading to do but am thinking SR3 (1500) or SR10.  Was told SR8 was higher maintenance.  Longer time between rebuilds is a major factor for me.  I do all my own work short of any specialized machining.

The car will be used only for HPDE so easier use than race car, but I will be doing a lot of track days.

Interested in people's opinion:

  • Which version for longest period between engine or trans overhaul
    • Would think SR10 motor since its the same as in my truck
  • What wears out and is done on the typical engine and trans overhaul
  • Parts cost
    • Are you tied to Radical for all the parts

That will help me decide if a Radical is for me and which version to concentrate my search on.  Then I'll have questions on which years and configuration to look for (or avoid).

Like I said, I have a lot of reading to do!

Thanks!

Rob

Sr3 with a 1340 motor is the sweet spot in my opinion (and I have a 1500).  Twice as long between engine rebuilds (1340 vs 1500) and not a big delta in performance.  I think the sr10 has 50 hour rebuild intervals (I could be wrong).  As I get more skilled and closer to racing (Radical Cup?) I will likely move to a center seat 1340 SR3 with the halo...but I need to spend a couple of years learning this thing since all of my track experience has been in GT cars.
