Hey team,

Looking to get a spare engine for our newly purchases SR3 RS (2011) as we'll probably need to get the current 1500 off for a rebuild pretty soon and don't want to lose prescious track time (I think the current engine could lunch itself at anytime as it's a fair bit over the recommended hours). We're based in NZ and spare second hand engines seem non-existant so wondering about getting a standard Hyabusa engine and doing "whatever needs to be done" to make it work with the Radical. I just have no idea about the "whatever needs to be done" bit. I'm assuming just building a 1340 will be a lot easier than a 1500 so will probably go with that. Assume we'd have to download a different ECU map but hopefully the rest is drop-in. Anyone know what's required to convert a standard busa engine?

Appreciate any insight anyone has on this...

Thanks!
Dave

Hi Dave (@def1),  I wouldn't recommend using a stock Hayabusa motor cycle engine in a Radical.  Radical makes a lot of changes withing the engine that enable it to survive in an automotive environment.  Things like changing the valves, changing the cam chain tensioner and modifying the cam chain guide clearances, modifying the clutch basket, changing the transmission gears in the 1500, etc..  Radical only sells these parts to certified Radical engine shops so they are not available at your local "Bob's Hayabusa shop".  I know it is tempting to try and save a little money by using a motorcycle engine, but it will actually end up causing more issues than it is worth.  I would recommend reaching out to your local Radical dealer or RLM in the UK to source an appropriate engine.  It may cost a bit more up front, but you will be avoiding a lot of issues.

Thanks Charley. Yes, I meant for a certified Radical workshop to do this work (there's only one in NZ I believe), was more curious about the extent of modifications required for a 1340 to decide whether it was a viable approach for us. I understand it's a bunch less for the 1340 vs 1500 but still sounds like quite a few modifications.

Cheers,
Dave
