Hayabusa internals
Hi guys. Hoping for some help. My 1500cc is due for its 40 hour service. At the moment the dealer in Australia is booked out until the end of the year. The other issue is they now send all engines back to the UK to be done. I can only imagine the freight bill and lead time on this!
Can anyone tell me what inside the engine and gearbox is standard Hayabusa and what isnt? I know pistons and rods are RPE. Can rings, bearings, gearbox parts etc be sourced locally? I don't care about the seal as I am not running the Radical Cup.
Anyone in Australia done their own rebuilds or had them done locally?
thanks.
Hi Kirk,
I'm in Tasmania and sent my SR3 RSX 1500 Long Stroke RPE engine away to the UK earlier this year.
I looked at local build options and couldn't find any that I was confident would know any intricacies with these engines... and I know from talking to my engine builder there are quite a few...
I would recommend talking to Dan Phillips and RLM Engines. Dan and Rich have done a fantastic job for me and the engine is now ready to send back... fully rebuilt, run in and with accompanying dyno results (and videos of the power runs, etc)
I think the biggest issue is the freight time... not so much the cost. It took quite a while (about 3 months) for my engine to arrive into the UK (but it was in the middle of the Covid sea freight shit-show). Cost was just under AU$2000 'Door to Door' from Tassie to the RLM Workshop... I would expect it would be similar on the way back... so let's say AU$4k return (My engine is hopefully travelling back in a container with a new car.. so I won't see a separate return freight invoice)
For what it's worth - air freight was quoted as $2,900 one way.
I went with sea freight and rather than be without my engine for ~6-7 months (at best) I purchased a new RPE 1500 engine from an Australian Dealer who has also been great to deal with. The rebuilt engine wil now become the spare (or I could sell it...)
Let me know if you want to talk about this - feel free to send me a private message and I'll call your mobile, or you can call mine...
You may want to check, but I also heard you don't need a 'Radical Seal' to run the Radical Cup in Australia... at least that was certainly true when I checked about 18 months ago...
Rod
@rjbender Hi Rod. Thanks for the reply. I know of RLM and they have a good reputation. I'm not against sending an engine to the UK just the turnaround time is so long unless I airfreight. I didn't buy the car to have it in the shed.
I have also considered the spare engine idea so having one to rotate between services. Not a bad idea.
My company is in the importing business and the freight isn't any better.
@rjbender Hey Rod, Thanks for sharing this info. Would you mind sharing who you got your new engine from? I'm in Melbourne and would like to get hold of a second engine as both a track day spare and so they can be rotated when one is in for rebuild. Thanks, Rich
@richarddurnall ... G'day Richard, I purchased mine through Arise Racing in WA. Jordan Oon is the contact there and has been good to deal with. He had a 'crate' engine, basically a brand new RPE 1500 Long Stroke engine in stock... so it was just a matter of getting it to Tasmania.
Garth Waldren Racing in Sydney is the East Coast agent - they might also have stock?
Hope that helps... what car have you got? Just using it for track days or are you racing as well? I've just bought a new SR3-XX... should be in Australia in late Feb. (currently bobbing about on a container ship in the Gibraltar Straight!)
Thanks Rod. Very helpful!
I have a 2015 RSX that I just use for track days at the moment, mostly Winton.
SR3 XX looks great!
If you do decide to sell the second engine rather than keep it as a spare, please let me know.
