Ok aero gurus. In the side pods directly behind the front wheel there is a wing mounted vertically. Whats it do?

I just had some repairs done and the guy doing them said it seems to wide at the front and would create a lot of drag. He didn't see it on the car though. He thought it could be thinner or even removed.

Looking forward to response.

Air is scooped from the side pods vents and directed to the rear, where the oil and water coolers are mounted.

Generally corner speed is optimized in a high downforce road race car; the downforce adds drag.
