I've googled around but can't find anything specific. What do they replace/inspect to reset the engine back to 0 hours?
what are the components that actually wear away during those 40 hours?

Does the top-end come off, pistons replaced etc? i'm just wondering if there's a standard checklist or is it entirely down to how it looks upon inspection.

Every piece of my internal engine/trans including heads was replaced except the block apparently.  A box of all the removed parts also accompanied my rebuild engine when it shipped back.

The RPE rebuild criteria involves time (certain items are automatically replaced), crack testing, Data (over revs etc) as well as other techniques developed over many years and engines serviced, providing logical intel.

Updated procedures and components are also implemented during refurbishment, creating parity amongst older and new engines.
