Spark Plug Gap and Torque
G’day DIY’ers
I've just installed a new RPE 1500 engine and completed my first event. Car ran faultlessly and I managed to Qualify in P1 then 4 wins from 5 sprint races.
All up the engine probably did about 70 minutes ‘on load’ and probably double that in terms of total run time.
The spark plugs that came with the engine were Denso Iridium IU27D’s… and were gapped at 0.033” when I got the engine out of the crate. I thought that was a wider gap than I expected (probably would have guessed 0.028”), but as these were supplied by Radical I didn’t change them.
interestingly, I purchased a spare set of plugs about three years ago, and when I measured these for a comparison they ranged between 0.033” and 0.034”…. So looks like the gap is wider than I would have guessed, and 0.033” might be correct.
Does anyone know what the right spark plug gap is?… I can’t find any reference to it in any of the Radical Handbooks on the Forum link.
I set the plug torque to 14N.m (10ft.lb)… seemed fairly low, but had been told it was correct. They stayed seated but felt a little looser when I removed them after the first event to check them. (I suspect the crush washers had ‘bedded in’) what torque settings are others using?
For reference, here’s what the plugs looked like after the first event… not much colour on them yet, but they look even which is probably a good sign….
And finally, does anyone know where these holes in the spark plug cylinder head cavities drain to? I’ve never seen anything like them before and I suspect they are there to make sure the plug cavities never fill up with water? (or oil?)… maybe important on a motorbike engine that’s more exposed to the elements??
Hi Rod, yes that is correct. Gap is .031-.035 as per manufacturer. RPE torque spec at 10ft/lbs is higher than the recommended 8ft/lbs from Suzuki. The drain hole is for water as you suspected, and exits below the exhaust port.
