Hi all,

I am looking at an engine change in the Clubsport, the existing engine is down on power. As there is limited tuning available for the Kawasaki ZZR engine, I currently have a 1200 fitted, I was thinking of a change to Suzuki as there are tuning options off the shelf.

Does anyone have the Hayabusa mounts they would sell, or take photos, sketch etc, anything that will help me with fabrication.

Many thanks

Frank

Hi @frank, where are you located?  If you are in the U.S. I know someone that is planning to sell a Prosport rolling chassis for a reasonable price that has all of the parts you would need to make the conversion (plus a bunch of spares).

I will take some pictures of the Suzuki engine installation today and try and get them posted later today.  Also if you go to the Prosport parts drawings in the Registry you can see which parts are different.  Here is a link. https://radicalsportscarregistry.com/radical-clubsport-and-prosport-parts-catalog/

Hi Charley,

Perfect, thanks very much, the mounts don't look to hard to fab up.

I'm working out the potential cost of the conversion, can I ask with the Hayabusa engine are you running a dry sump,  using the bike ECU and if it was converted from a ZZR engine, is the existing radiator/oil cooler sufficient.

Many thanks.

Frank

Hi Frank,  I was told that this car originally came with a carbureted 1500cc Hayabusa. The car was owned by the same person from the Mid 2000's until recently.  That owner told me that he blew up the original engine and had a stock Hayabusa 1300 engine sent to a well know race engine builder who converted the engine to Radical Specifications (changed valves, timing chain clearances, etc.).  At that time he replaced the carburetors with the Suzuki injection system and ECU.  This car has the Radical wet sump pan from old 1500 engine but I have been told that several people make wet sump pans that will work with these cars.  Apparently the stock pan is too deep and doesn't have the proper baffling.  There are also companies that make dry sump conversions for these engines.  I was told that to convert a wet sump car to a dry sump car the oil cooler does need to be replaced to handle the higher flow rates.  The water pump will also have to be relocated because the oil pump for the dry sump system sits where the stock water pump is located.  An external electric water pump is needed.

Hi Frank,

Where in the UK are you based, I see the photo is from Clay Pidgeon which isn't far from me.

I have my Clubsport in bits at the moment so the mounts could be measured up (mine has a Busa in it now)?

Thanks for your message, that would be great if you would measure them for me. Could you draw around the two flat plates that extend the existing rear mounts, I could possibly then get these CNC cut. Can paypal you to cover postage or I could PM you my email address if you could scan them and of course detail of the side mounts would be a great help.

Where do you live, I'm Newquay. Do you plan to race your Clubbie, the Hill climbs and Sprints in the Southwest are a good day out.

Cheers

Frank

@frank

If you pm your email address I can email the drawings to you.

How quickly do you need the info, it might take me a few days to be able to do it?

I used to hillclimb from 1991 to 2007 (different car) and then (in 2007) got my Clubbie and raced in the Combe GTs and then a bit in the OSS. When I finally get it back together I intend to race in the 750MC Bikesports but other stuff keeps getting in the way. Mine is chassis 100 in the register with a brief description of the developments I have made to it.

I installed a Gen2 Hayabusa into my Prosport. The previous engine was a Gen 1 Hayabusa. I was able to reuse the engine mounts BUT the countershaft did not align with the rear sprocket. The Gen 2 and Gen 1 Hayabusa's have different output shafts and counter shaft locations. I solved the misalignment with an offset countershaft sprocket. The sprockets are readily available since drag racers use them to offset the chain for bigger rear tires.

I also changed from a carb engine to fuel injection using the Hayabusa ECU. That is a whole new world of head scratching.

Hi, what issues did you have with the Suzuki ECU, anything in particular I should be concerned about.

Thanks for the heads up re the sprocket.

Cheers

My car had a carb engine, so I had to graft the Suzuki ECU/harness into the Radical chassis. Lots of wires and sensors. I found a color schematic and had it blown up and printed out on a poster size sheet. Tedious work. The ignition switch circuit required a resistor to replace the key switch. Lots of info on the web about all this because it is a common swap. A friend of mine put a Gen 2 Hayabusa in a Ralt Atlantic car and he bought a harness from someone on the internet that made his swap a lot easier. Classic battle between money and time, which do you have the most of?

Just remembered my one issue, the motor didn't like starting. George Dean figured it out. I think it is a green wire that has to be energized on startup to prime the fuel system before start up. It has been probably 5 years since I did that, so just know there is a startup wire that needs 12v on startup.
