Hi.

Asking for a bit of info here....

I have a SR3 SL......I presume it has a similar clutch to a SR3, maybe.

Anyway, the clutch has been having issues......now it does not work at all and fluid is coming from the housing (hole at bottom of housing)

My question....I presume to get to the clutch, I am going to have to undo the housing....correct?

I regret to say that I don't have any first hand experience with the SL so I can't be of much help.  My speculation would be that you will have to remove the transmission to see what is going on inside.

Hopefully @rlm-dan will weigh in on the discussion.

Charley

P.S.  Please add your car to the Registry, it would be great to see more about it!

Thanks Charley,

Clutch in SL is nothing like the SR3 unfortunately, more like the SR8.

I suspect your clutch master cylinder seals have failed, Radical did do different versions of this over the years.

As Charley said it is a transmission out job and the replacement of the master cylinder/seals from Radical. Think the release bearing is supplied as well but if not worth doing whilst you have it all out.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Thanks for your reply.

I will add the car to the registry.

My car is the prototype SL ('Daisy' as radical named it)  Good fun.....but is it suitable for the road?......not sure!  makes my previous car (Westfield SEIGHT) seem normal!

I will add the car in the SR3 section soon(ish!)

looks a bit like this anyway

@rlm-dan

Thanks for this.

I will start on this....sometime!

I was looking at things and I will start to take things apart and see how it goes

the clutch line goes in / out to the bleed valve...I will start on dismantling things from here

This bit.....

Hi Gareth,

I remember this car from my Radical days and I seem to recall that Neil from Corinium has been working on it recently?

It is a gearbox out job, so removing drive shafts etc to get to it.

Hi Dan

Yes Neil has been working on it recently.

I bought the car from Andy Cummings (6th Gear Experience) and when the MOT ran out, I found it a bit problematic for anyone to actually look at it!

Neil has been pretty good and done various works on it, taken it to Radical to get ECU re programmed on the rolling road (twice!)

I have contacted him about this and now have the car up on stands and ready to get started this weekend.

I am not sure if I need to take off drive shafts off, I may be able to move the gearbox back to get to the clutch area....not sure.  will let you know after this weekend!

Gareth

Sounds like it has been keeping you just as busy off the road as on it!

I think the drive shafts will have to come out, the clutch release slides over the input shaft of the box so you need to come all the way out of the engine with it to get the slave cylinder over the end.

Ha!....you are probably not far wrong with the off road bit!

I wanted one for a while and apart from trying to buy a new one (radical were not very responsive at the time) I found one for sale.  In fact, I have never seen one for sale since, apart from LH drive versions and motorbiked engine converted ones.

Could always buy a Rapture….wait till I tell the wife how much they are!

Update.....job done!

Good news....the job cost nothing to do. It needed new o rings on the clutch actuator....I dug out one from some bits and pieces I already has

Bad news...the job took me most of Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon!

And yes I had to flipping remove the driveshafts....I could pull the gearbox back far enough to remove the clutch actuator thing.

Glad you got it sorted, sounds like it was the master cylinder seals then?

Keep in mind I am fairly sure Radical offered different versions of them so you may find there is a newer part available.

Yes.  Although the o rings (one inside, one outside) were still in one piece. they had presumably lost their ability to seal.

I dug about in my o ring box, till I found one of similar shape, then hey presto....all good again.

Got to admit, it was a bit of a job getting to it though and I have not fiddled about with clutches for a fair while.

In fact, the last time was probably when I was racing in a Mini....not a new version, the A series engine one!

Will probably just leave it like that.  Might contact Radical for a new version if it happens again.....although it did look like it was just the o rings that were to blame
