Hello from my garage in Germany 🙂

i bought 8 weeks ago my dreamcar, a radical sr3 🙂 with broken and disassembeld engine, a lot of bodywork problem, dirty, ...

i disassemble the car, cleaned the frame and the complete technic. Now i 'try' to put everything together. Always bad to take over a project from somebody else.

I bought a used Hayabusa engine and put all the radical stuff on it, found a lot of parts which where missing but ok, we will see.

The interesting! thing is, that the first trackday i want to participate is this month / july / the 14th 😀 I have vacation from thursday to the 14th to put the rest together - i am sure that i will have a lot of questions in the following days, hopefully you can help here and there.

I have a mechanical background, several years in formula student a track an E30M3 clone, too which i actually rebuild from M50turbo to Ls3 with M3DKG as a mid engine setup ... So guys, you see, a tough plan. Support is REALLY  appreciated 😀

FIRST questions:

- i put the engine in, with oilpan, ... and refilled it with oil to the full sign / gauge on the sight of the engine (clutch). Than i turned the ignition on - turned the starter: no oilpressure in the display. I checked the oil pressure sensor, seemed correctly assembled (external one). Any ideas? what can i check?

- when i turned on the ignition, i heard a relais clicking all the time. click - click - click - ... fuel pump is pumping. Any ideas?

Hi @garagenwerke, your car looks great!  What chassis number is it?  To help with your questions, I need to ask a few questions first.  Is the Hayabusa engine you installed from a motor or did it come out of a Radical or other automotive application?  When you say that you put the Radical parts on it, what specific parts did you use?  There are key differences between a motorcycle engine and a Radical engine.  Is this a wet sump or dry sump set up?  Is it a K7 or K8 engine? With those answers I can help you more.

I am looking forward to following your progress!

Thank you Charley 🙂

Chassis No i will post on thursday. I guess it is 124 but i will check and post / register here.

> Hayabusa Bike engine / K7 (the old one)

> wet sump (a flat (radical?!) oilpan with a shorted Suzuki snorkel and Dash fittings for the oil cooler)

> Radical parts: oil pan, shortend snorkel to oil pump, dash fitting on the side to oil pressure sensor, jenvey single throttle bodies, exhaust system, GDU adapter, clutch actuator

- is the camshaft sensor needed? If yes, how is the signal wire structure? I remember that I didn't found the according connector 🙁

I am back in the garage on thursday morning, i will make a lot of pictures of the engine bay and post it here to give you best picture of the situation possible.

Hi @garagenwerke,

Welcome to the forum!

Good to see you going through an older car and keeping it fresh. Does look like a Gen 1 engine on a wet sump.

Assuming that you are on 12V start you may struggle for oil pressure when cranking - wet sump and 12V start doesn't go together to well for this. You will most likely need to start it up for pressure. This needs to be done with no throttle/revs and for a few seconds to ensure that you do not damage anything.

Make sure the oil jet is fitted behind the oil filter also.

Some random thoughts, I would recommend fitting a Gen 2 clutch basket if not fitted, along with a HD or Gen 2 output shaft. I assume you are staying 1300 with H beam rods and high compression pistons?

Make sure you swap over all the reliability parts, as Charley says a lot of parts are upgraded.

Assuming you are still on the MBE engine management then a Cam sensor is not used for this engine.

Let me know if I can help any further.

Hi Dan,

Thank you! What is the oil jet?

Red of it in another post, but can't find a picture or explanation.

I am using a 100% stock bike engine plus radical externals. If it's working, I can do every update you guys recommend to it in the winter.

Hi,

here the pics of my oil pan system.

The filter is dry?!

So this is my actual setup. I see no wrong installations so far. I talked to a suzuki mechanic, he mentioned that engines who had no oil for a long time, oilpressure is rising after 5 to seven seconds with engine running. Can this be confirmed? According to his information, the starter rpm is not enough to fill the complete system.

If that is true, I have no problem so far.

Do you guys pre-fill the oil filter? Should I pre fill the oil cooler in the side?

@garagenwerke

As I said above:

'Assuming that you are on 12V start you may struggle for oil pressure when cranking - wet sump and 12V start doesn't go together to well for this. You will most likely need to start it up for pressure. This needs to be done with no throttle/revs and for a few seconds to ensure that you do not damage anything.'

You most likely need to start it for pressure just do not rev it.

The jet is the one you can see fitted behind the oil filter, with an 8mm allen head. The one from the failed engine should have a different sized hole to the one in your radial engine.

Also if the old engine has failed I would recommend that you replace your oil cooler and clean out all of your oil lines plus tank - the debris gets everywhere and could cause your replacement engine to fail.

You will need to fit things like the HD clutch springs, clutch pawls, M8 selector drum stop bolt etc from your failed engine otherwise you are most likely to have problems.

Lastly make sure you set the oil level correctly, for the Radical wet sump in the car it is different to the road bike - you will need to run a lot more oil.

Hey Dan,

Thank you!!! Of course I cleaned the oil cooler. Good tip with the oil plug / jet behind the filter. I will check it.

The clutch basket from the old engine was damaged, I can't use it. Does the stock clutch doesn't work for first tests?

Where can I get these HD clutch parts?

Your tip seems to be 100% correct, thank you!

@garagenwerke

I would recommend using a Gen 2 clutch basket as it is much stronger.

Heavy duty clutch springs are a must due to the weight of the car, you should be able to find them anywhere that sells Hayabusa tuning parts - I could supply but Brexit has made things very difficult to send small low value parcels!

Hi guys.

I checked all the points and completed my oil system again. The jet was really smaller from radical.

I have, so far, all things together. But I have no spark and no fuel is injected. Sure I don't need the camshaft sensor?

Where is the crankshaft sensor located? Please find the pictures attached.

Are there pins on the spark plugs needed?

OK, it's running 😎

Green to blue/white cable. Fixed it with a own connector.

Now the rest.

How much oil is in the engine with a complete empty cooler?

Question of the evening:

How to install the GDU in the frame with installed engine. What's the trick? Can't find a way to put it in...
