Hello Everyone,

I test drove an SR3XX recently and the car was great besides for one issue. The dash and shift lights being on the wheel were too low to be in my line of sight. I’ve heard that the factory is aware of this and some kind of update is coming.  Has  anyone had this issue themselves and have any suggestion, or know about an update coming from factory to address this.

Interesting comments.  I have a new SR3XX, and have found it to have an unusual combination of seat, pedals, steering wheel, and dash dimensional struggles.  I am only 5'-9" tall, so I needed a custom molded bead seat insert to lift me us slightly to see comfortably over the dash with clear view.  In doing so, with the seat fully back extended, my arms are still to close to steering wheel so slightly awkward with really bent arms.  At the same time, I could barely touch the pedals, had them extended fully, still wish accelerator was slightly closer.

With all that being said, the digital steering wheel display is awkwardly low.   I wear prescription glasses, so really cant read the dash regardless due to its close proximity.  However, I have figured out all the color schemes for dash and simply watch for those while driving.  I have gotten comfortable with the shift lights out of the corner of my eyes, just wish the manual would give the factory RPM settings for the shift light colors.

In nutshell, the overall geometry of seat position, pedals, steering, and display are not optimum and seems like a tall person would have even more struggles.

But, dont be confused, I absolutely love this car and have no regrets coming from a full race Porsche car.

I agree that the new steering wheel is too low on the SR10 and SR3 XX; I much prefer the old MXL2 display.  As a solution, I have installed the Aim shift light module on the dash.  It won't show you which gear you are in, but I find that counting is better than looking down.  I added mine after I received the car but I think now this is an option from the factory.

Hey David,

Thanks for the post and pictures.  Your solution seems great for shift lights, but what about other dash info & warnings.  I'm not sure if the AIM system in the SR3 allows you the full level of customization of a regular AIM MXS, for example my other car with AIM MXS the entire dash turns a color and a corresponding LED will flash for various warnings related to temperatures & pressures.  Even if I'm not looking at the dash it's bright enough that it still catches my attention.  I would be concerned in the SR3 that unless I'm specifically checking my temps & pressures on straightaway for example, I wouldn't see any warnings.

@raider89 Have you driven other SR3's?  I wonder if your findings are specific to the XX or you would think the same in any SR3.

Does not address those issues.  I agree the old MXL2 dash is a better design.

I just took deliver of an SR10.  I am short (5'6") and have trouble seeing the gear indicator.  I need  raise the seat and will need to have a custom insert made.  I have the shift light installed which helps for redline but I cannot see the gear indicator.  I am told by my contact at Spring Mnt. the factory is coming up with a solution to raise the steering wheel.  I don't have any info on timing and if there is an additional cost but the factory knows this is an issue.

@johnannz I have heard the same about steering wheel being raised, but was curious if anyone had more concrete info.

I spoke with a friend at Radical and he assured me that the Factory is aware of the concerns and is working on a solution.  But, he didn’t give me any other information.

@charleyhradicalsportscarregistry-com Thanks Charley, I was hoping you would chime in 🙂

I wonder what the timeline is for that.

@dudical26, I don’t know what the timing is but I would imagine it shouldn’t take too long.  I will let you know if I am able to get any additional information.

@raider89 - G'day Dan,

Regarding your comment in this post above.... "I have gotten comfortable with the shift lights out of the corner of my eyes, just wish the manual would give the factory RPM settings for the shift light colors."

While I haven't seen an XX 'in the flesh', I'm almost 100% sure you can see the shift light configuration in the AiM Configuration software.  I've got two different types of AiM Dash's (MXL2 and MXG) and they both have the same set-up options.  You should see something like this in the 'Alarms' set-up page

 ... is that the type of info you were looking for??

Wow, that would be awesome to access and understand.  I am new to AIM and Radical, my prior Porsche race car had VBox data system.  Am curious if you can give me any guidance or steps to get to RPM alarm page you show above?

@raider89 - G'day Again Dan,

It's great that I could at least help in a small way....

I'm no expert either, but have been using AiM gear for many years now, so I'm definitely in the 'self-taught' category.

We are lucky to have an real expert here, Matt Romanowski as an active member (@trailbrake), so I expect he would also be happy to help with any questions...

There are some fantastic YouTube videos done by AiM that are on the web (must be close to 50 or more now, and each one is about an hour long!), and I will attach one of those below (actually it is one that is co-hosted by Matt !!) that shows exactly how/where the shift light rpm table is configured....

I'm not sure how much you have already done with your dash (configuring it to suit your needs, rather than just using it with Radical's standard configuration as supplied) but to do any of this you will need to have a laptop with RaceStudio 2 or 3 installed.  This is the application that is used to connect to your dash (and SmartyCam) to import/export configurations and make changes.  It is also the same application that lets you download the data from each track session that your dash collects.  Maybe your already using that?

The video below shows and example of the process to change your shift light configuration in the "Shift Lights and Alarms" tab in the configuration page (with an MXP dash... but it's almost identical for the other AiM units).  You can start at 6:15, but you will then miss the intro with Matt...

The section to listen for is the 'Gear Dependent Shift Light' part at 9:15

...happy learning!

I misspoke.  I think the steering wheel is fine where it is at on the Radicals, but the display was moved from the dash to the steering wheel which makes it difficult to see because it is lower than line of sight, whereas the old display was located at the top of the dash.  The new display on the steering wheel is very nice with more information and views, but just too low.  The display location is good for a formula car where the steering wheel is in the line of sight, but it is not very good for the ergonomics of a Radical.
