My 2013 SR3 has the AIM SmartyCam GP HD 2.1 setup for the forward video and telemetry capture. For capturing notable rearward action, I have just used a GoPro attached to the rear clamshell.

The most recent race I had two separate rearward incidents that I needed footage from, with the last one taking me out of commission as I was run over from the back by a larger car that blew the braking zone. Unfortunately, the GoPro let me down both times (as seems typical). It runs out of power prematurely, or I forget to turn it on, or it shuts itself off for whatever mystery reason. With the AIM setup I have never missed a single frame of any event. Not ever.

So I'm putting in a second SmartyCam for capturing rearward action. My question is whether the new SmartyCam GP HD 2.2 that has the EXP port on it makes it trivial to connect up to my existing setup along the lines of the attached figure  or whether I need to do something more invasive.

Can I plunk down a GP 2.2 and move the CAN-bus input cable from the GP 2.1 to the GP 2.2 and then connect a cable from the GP 2.2 EXP port to the GP 2.1 CAN-bus input port and be done? Is there a more efficient way to go about this?

You can run 2 cameras on one system, but what is shown would not work. The system would use the exp plug on the binder 712 connector from the dash to a 4 port data hub https://trailbrake.com/data-hub-0-4m/ The you would plug each recorder into the data hub. If you have a GPS05 or GPS08, they would also go into the data hub. If you have the B version of a GPS, it would have to go into the SCHD GP 2.1. The SCHD GP 2.2 uses the regular GPS version.

I know that can be a little confusing. If you post up what logger and other items you have on the data system, I can tell you exactly how to do it. You may need a power cable with diodes in it as well as the GP cameras take a little more power because they have smaller batteries.

@trailbrake Attached is a picture of my existing setup. It's the standard AIM camera setup for the 2013 SR3. I thought it was a GP HD 2.1, but I'm frankly not sure and I'm not sure how to find out.

So when the GP 2.2 advertises an integrated hub as one of the salient features, it would still require an external hub in order to pass the primary CAN-bus signals through to the existing SmartyCam? Do I need separate external hub plus also separate GPS modules? What all would I need to most efficiently get second camera view?

I don't really need telemetry captured on the rearward camera since that's already captured on the forward one. Can I simply use a SmartyCam for rear video that is not connected to the rest of the car other than being powered, and have it just serve as a rugged GoPro for video-only capture? Is the EXP port on the 2.2 useful in any way for me in serving as a trigger? I can make the new 2.2 forward facing with telemetry and the old 2.1 the rear-facing video-only if that makes things easier.

That is a SCHD GP 2.1. You could confirm when it's connected to a computer and see what it is in RS3.

The SCHD GP 2.2 doesn't have a hub, it has an integrated ECU Bridge.

What dash do you have in the car? Most likely, you will need the $60 data hub. If the camera wasn't connected to a dash or GPS, you could try to set it for recording when the lowest G threshold is achieved, but I'm not sure how well it would work. I've never tried that config or settings.

The GP 2.2 has the 7 pin ECU and mic connection for the ECU bridge functions. One 5 pin is for the GPS and the other is for connection to other AiM components. There is a chance that the two 5 pins would pass through and work like a data hub, I don't know the internal wiring and I have not tried it.
