Greetings everyone.  I’m an SCCA Spec Racer Ford racer in Atlanta and a member at Atlanta Motorsports Park.  I love the SRF and the series but my work schedule makes it very hard to get away for 3-4 day weekends, so my racing this year was very limited. AMP has a monthly Saturday racing series where they’ve been reliably getting 10-16 car fields, mostly Radicals, and I’m thinking about moving on from the SRF into an SR1.  Primal Racing is at AMP and I’ll probably try to do a demo day soon, but I came here to do some research. Would appreciate any advice or wisdom, especially as it pertains to reliability and running costs.

Hi Aaron (@speedsmith), welcome to the Registry!  The SR1 is a great car, but I would recommend trying an SR3 also.  There are reasons that the SR3 is Radicals most successful car.  But I am sure you will be happy with either.  🙂

Thanks!  I’ll definitely try both the SR1 and SR3. The house racing series at AMP has a lot more competition in SR1 so I’m inclined to go that direction but I’ll keep an open mind.

When I was deciding which direction to go in with a race car,  I did the one day at AMP with Primal in their SR1.  Good guys at Primal.  Even with older hybrid tires and having to wait for slower other students behind the lead/follow, I was sold on the car.  It is true the SR3's are more popular than a SR1, but the kind of track AMP is (lots of medium to slower turns in quick succession with only one pretty short straight) lends itself to there being less of a difference between the two cars.  Still some difference yes, but less than there would be at a bigger/long straights track like Road Atlanta/Daytona/Sebring.  Just my opinion, but if you are sticking with just AMP, an SR1 can be a good choice.

I do intend to take it to other tracks, although AMP will be home. I’ve raced at RA, Roebling, Barber and CMP so those are all future possibilities. Still, seems like the SR1 would hold it’s own at any of them. My SRF is slower than an SR1 and it’s plenty fast at any of those tracks when properly driven.

Well, it's official- I'm a Radical owner.  2019 SR1, chassis 138, newly rebuilt motor.  Obviously the test drive went well... amazing cars!  It actually drives a lot like my SRF, just faster on the straights.  The 10k redline and paddle shifters make it feel like an F1 car.  It has more downforce than the SRF, but the SR1 is on treaded tires and the SRF on Hoosiers so it feels like it has similar cornering grip.  The SR1 squirms around a little more but isn't as edgy at the limit.  Overall I think it will be a short learning curve.  Racing it on Saturday, very excited!
