As mentioned in some earlier posts, I recently got a 2000 / 2001 Prosport with a Kawasaki 1000 engine.  The battery that came with the car is dead and obviously the wrong battery.  I am going to order a new Odyssey battery, but I am not sure which is the correct battery.  My SR3 used a PC-545, but that was part of a two battery 24v system so I suspect it will be too small.  I am thinking that I will need either a 680 or a 950.  What are others using?

Thanks,

Charley

Charley, fwiw, I'm using an Odyssey PC1100 on my SR8. Not sure that's helpful...

Thanks for checking John.  I finally measured my battery tray and it looks like I am limited to a PC545 or a PC625.

I am using a LiON Battery Tender battery for the Hayabusa. Weighs nothing and very small. Been in the car for at least three years now.

So my battery will no longer hold a charge. I bought a AGM battery to replace it, one for a Hayabusa. Come to find out the lithium battery is much smaller than the standard battery.

My battery is located low on the left side of the car in the engine compartment. Real close to the header that I heat shielded. I am looking at building a new battery location and wondered where folks have been putting their batteries. I run a single 12V battery.

If you are going to relocate your battery I would look at putting it behind the left side pod like on the 24v SR3’s.  You may have to move it forward more to clear the air inlet?  Also, you mentioned that you got an AGM and then you said you got a Lithium battery.  I believe those two different things.  Looking forward to seeing your progress.

I am replacing the lithium with an AGM. That is the source of my problem. The old battery (lithium) is smaller than the new battery (AGM). I had modified the original battery box to fit the smaller battery. Plus I do not like the original location due to heat. putting the battery in the pod is interesting, but servicing the battery would require pod removal.

I am thinking of locating it in the cockpit just on the other side of the bulkhead where the secondary battery is installed. My SCCA buddies tell me you no longer have to separate the battery from the cockpit. Probably due to the new battery technology.

Oh,  lithium to AGM...got it.  Putting it in the cockpit would work also.

When people have the batteries in the side pods they often use a short jumper with an Anderson coupler to jump the battery if needed.  That way the side pod never needs to come off.  In five years I never had to access the battery under my side pod.

Here are a couple of pictures of what the charging / jumper leads look like with the Anderson connector.

HI Charlie,

I just purchased a 2016 SR3 RSX. First track day is in about a week. Can’t wait!

I like the Anderson connectors you have on your car. Looks like a slick way to connect a trickle charger. I have a question...did you connect one Anderson connector (and a positive and negative lead) to each of the two batteries? I’ve never charged a two battery, 24V systems before and would like to avoid making a mistake.

John

Welcome John, congratulations on your new car!  That picture is an example, but is not my car.  I know that when one one connector is used it is hooked to the plus and minus on the rear battery and I have been told that the same is done with the front battery.  Radical sells a kit to do the installation which makes everything simple.  I know Spring Mountain normally has these in stock.

Thanks again for the Spring Mountain suggestion. They have the kit, plus a custom bracket for mounting the connectors. It’s on the way and should be here before the weekend.

I’ve got a newbie question. I need to remove the side pod to do the installation. I’m looking at the side pod and am not seeing how to remove it. Can you/anyone tell me how to remove the left side pod on a SR3?

Great! Post some pictures as your are doing the work.  Are you running wires to both batteries?

To get to the battery in the side pod you should be able to get enough access by  just loosening up the upper center body section.  Several people have been asking about how to remove the side pods so I just made a post showing the process.  https://radicalsportscarregistry.com/radicalforum/general-discussion/side-pod-removal-on-sr3-8/

Yes, I’m going to run cables to both batteries. I’ll definitely take some photos and upload to the site.

I just read your explanation on how to remove the side pods. Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to put that together. Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one struggling with how to get those things off the car.
