I had a local shop suggest I install the NGK CR9EIA-9 spark plugs in my 1300 engine.

I'm still greene when it comes to these topics.

Thoughts?

That is the spark plug that is used in the 1340 and 1500 engines.

As the man himself said, this is the current plug for the Gen 2 onwards engine - its an Iridium version. Remember you will need the additional screw on caps for your plug leads.

Gen 1 engines use the CR9E as standard - again this needs caps or you can get a CR9EB that comes with this cap fixed as standard.
