Is it easy to determine if you have a 24volt system just by looking for two batteries ?

what did radical do just put two batteries in parallel to get cranking current or in series to run true 24volts?

The easiest way to know if the car has a 24 volt system is to look on the side wall of the driver compartment (near your thigh when you are sitting in the car) for a silver box like in the picture below.  This box is the charger for the second battery.  There are two 12 volt batteries in series.  The battery in the engine compartment is charged by the alternator on the engine, and the second battery is buried inside the left side pod and is charged by the silver battery charger.

I have not seen 24v starters or dashboards.  None of my stuff like cameras will accept 24v.  So how does radical handle that?  What was the reason for 24volts?

Great question. The only part of the car that operates at 24 volts is the starter.  Everything else operates at 12 volts.  So cameras, the Aim dash, headlights, etc. all operate at 12 volts.

Carl, I just realized that I didn’t answer part of your question.  The 24v starting system was added to give extra cranking power for the 1500 engines due to their high compression.

Quick question, I apologize beforehand for the horrible picture. For the radical charger left of the driver (for LHD cars), does a person just supply 110V to the charger. Below is a picture of the Anderson plug on the left sidepod of the car. Did all Radical SR3's come with these plugs? I was wondering if I need to get a charger that plugs into that Anderson plug? Or if I can just plug in 110V from an extension cord into the Anderson plug pictured below from a wall outlet? I just didn't want to directly plug in 110V to that plug if it needed to be supplied by a charger.

Thank you,

The Anderson connector is connected directly to the battery. You can connect a jump or starter battery or charger to it. I use mine for a maintenance charger between events.

Hi @dennis81, those connectors are made by a company called Sure-seal. You should be able to find them on the internet or Spring mountain carries them in stock.

With that said, make sure to follow them to make sure you know what they are wired to.  I have never seen these used for a charger connection before, although someone could have added them.  These are commonly used on the cars harness to provide power.  If you want to use them to charge the batteries make sure that one goes directly to each battery and not to the entire car harness.

@dennis81 was that in fact for charging?  I have the same thing in an 09 I bought and there is no Anderson plug I can find.

@nautoncall, No, the Sure-Seal connectors are not for charging.  If your car doesn't have the Anderson plugs it most likely is not set up to be charged.  You can add Anderson plugs to each battery if you want to have the capability to Jump start the car in addition to charging.  If you just want to charge the batteries you can add Ctek charger port to each battery.  The attached picture of a Ctek charger cable with built in charge monitoring lights, or they also sell one with out the lights.  Of course if you use a different style charger you can use there cables.

I would also recommend getting a cover for that electronics box.  It is hard to tell from the picture but it is likely either a Geartronics shift box, or perhaps a gear indicator box, or shift light box.

  1. @charleyhradicalsportscarregistry-com it’s the geartronics.  I was going to make a cover but while tearing the car apart I was fortunate to find the cover down under the pedals!!  Yea I like to keep my cars with trickle chargers!!  These batteries aren’t easy to get to!!!
