Morning all!

was out working on the car last night, just about ready for our first track day in weeks time. Whilst checking all the fluids, I though I’d check the oil in the GDU...but then I found myself not knowing the process... 😂

so, I think I’m right in saying, you fill the oil in the plug circled in blue until it comes out of the plug circled in red????

before putting any new fluids in, I thought I’d check the level of oil by removing the side bung, but oil started to leak out??? I thought it was supposed to be level with this hole so it shouldn’t leak out when the plugs removed, but be level with it?

also, last question... what’s the orange plug on side marked “oil” for? And what oil does it use???

thanks all

Hi Sam, That is correct that you remove the red circled inspection plug on the left side and fill from the top blue circled plug until fluid drips out the inspection plug. Make sure the car is level. The orange knob is actually a vent that can be removed for cleaning or replacement. In regards to GDU fluid, it is recommended to use: Neo Synthetics 75W90 RHD Gear Oil. It it also looks like the plugs on your GDU may have been swapped. The top fill plug I see has the hole for safety wiring but I can’t tell if the inspection plug does as well. The inspection plug is usually safety wired after inspecting the level.

@crit I excellent. Thank you!

So do you think it’s worth taking the side plug out and letting any fluid run out till it finds its correct level?

if it were over filled, what would happen?

@m22ble doesn't hurt to take that side plug out, you can also see if it needs to be topped off. Just make sure to put a rag underneath it in case it is overfilled.

@crit well we did start to take the plug out and some oil started to come out so we put it back in... so I’m thinking we best remove it and let the excess run out?

@m22ble, it should only be dripping out a few drops at a time.

@m22ble, As Crit said, it should be level with the hole and now higher.  If it is overfilled it will come out of the breather and make a mess.

Also, I noticed from you pictures that your car is the first car I have seen that does not have a GDU cooler.  You may want to consider adding one because the GDU's work very hard and get quite hot... even with a cooler.

If you decide to add one I know someone that has an extra that he would likely sell.  I know he has the hoses also but I don't know if he has an extra pump.

GDU Cooler

ahh, thanks Charley. I didn’t know this. Yes I would definalty be interested in installing one. The less risk of braking things, the better. I would be very much interested if your friend wants to sell, only problem is I’m in England 🤔

if he can’t, any ideas where I can source all the parts from?

My hunch is you'd need to buy the pump from Radical.  It will likely have the inlets and outlets.

You'll also need to replace two of the GDU's plugs with fittings, so you can get oil out of the bottom of the GDU and back into the top after cooled.

I'm in the process of creating the oil lines and mounting the cooler, but I haven't really started yet.  My car isn't a Radical, though, so my lines and cooler mounting may be different than yours.
