My SR8 had what appears to be an older style of harnesses.

They have the latch attached to the left side lap belt.
They become 3" wide below the shoulder strap buckles,
The lap belts are 3" wide.
The crotch straps have no adjustment other than the mounting points.
The lap belts also adjust by pulling the loose end away from the mounting point (you pull them towards the buckle to cinch down).
They work very well, nothing binds, comfort is good.  The two crotch straps have enough room in the hole in the seat base that they can spread apart just enough that there's clearance for "Me Manly Bits" and these stay happy whist driving - and we know we need happy attachments to go fast.

I replaced with the old harnesses, due to being out of date, with what Radical is now using and have a couple of questions for guys that have newer belts.

The replacements are 2" straps through out - no wider sections anywhere on the system.
The latch is attached to the crotch strap.
The crotch strap has adjustments like the lap and shoulder belts instead of being a fixed length that's set at the mounts.
The lap belts adjust by pulling away from the latch - opposite of the last set (of which I prefer - can get better pull/leverage to tighten).

So, just where are you guys placing the buckles on the crotch strap?  To get the latch in the correct spot (right below my belly button), I have to have the straps fully extended at the adjustment buckles and it places the buckles right in the opening in the bottom of the seat - it causes them to sit one in front of the other instead of side by side.  It makes for a fairly uncomfortable bump in my seat  between my, uhm, "bits" and "exit".  I feel like I'm sitting on a wide, flat stick.

If I put the buckles below the seat I
A) can't get to the adjustment buckles
2) don't have enough length on the adjustable part of the crotch strap.  It puts the latch down about 2" lower into my crotch than it should be and is really going to make braking not a lot of fun.

If I set it up so that the buckles come through the bottom of the seat base I can adjust the needed position for the latch but I now have a pair of buckles sitting  in front of my friends and they like this even less than the lower position.  They have to be staggered with one placed in front of the other, as there's not enough room in the seat base (or between my legs, for that matter).

So all this info is to ask:  "What are you doing with the crotch strap and where are you placing the adjustment buckles?"

It's not like I'm a large guy so things are all crammed into the same area - heck, I'm 5'6"/1.67M and 160 lbs./73kg and fit well.

Do I open up the base of the seats where the buckles come through so they can sit next to each other or bring the buckles farther up so they sit inside each thigh or ???   I had the seat base in/out of the car five times yesterday playing with the *&#$ crotch strap position and still can't figure out a comfy place.  I keep thinking I'm gonna cheat and call my old crotch straps back into service even though they're out of date.

Thoughts anyone?

I haven't come across this one yet.  I would give Spring Mountain a call.  They have seen just about everything and will know the best way to solve it.

Instead of hitting them up again I was hoping someone here on the site would chime in.  I just need someone that has the adjustable crotch straps to tell me where the buckles on them are.  Are they located under the seat or is Radical threading them up through the hole so that the two buckles are between your thighs?

Richard, on my Schroth harness the anti-sub buckles are under the seat. I had to R&R the seat a few times to get them adjusted properly.

Richard, I did some checking and SM recommends having the adjusters above the seat.

Thanks guys. 🙏🏻

And between the two of you I’m back at square one. Lol

I’m headed Spring Mountain in nine days with my buckles just peaking through the hole in the seat base. I may get motivated and pull the seat AGAIN and see about moving them up between my legs a tad before I head out.

John is correct,

This is the way to do it, the attachment points are where you adjust the length. It’s a pain, but is the only comfy answer.

I just installed a full 2” Sabelt formula harness. I like that the lap belts have an adjuster and the crotch belts are soft loops.

Richard, what was the verdict from your trip to Spring Mountain?  How did they recommend the straps get installed?

We never got a chance to discuss them.  After reading here and looking at the system more, I'll be shortening the straps where they mount so that the adjustment buckles are under the seat and then I'll adjust length of the latch end to an appropriate place.

My list of things to do to the car is getting longer.

  • Seat belt adjustments
  • Brake replacement & fluid flush
  • Engine & trans oil change
  • CV cleaning/regreasing
  • Repairing the wing mounts (both are cracked, have replacements in hand)
  • Replace the little nub at them back jack point (tore it off during my last off road excursion)
  • Make rolling work stand for the car

I'm sure there will be more.
