Anyone have suggestions on two way radios?  Spring Mountain requires radio communications and looking if anyone has experience in purchasing and installing.

I have a set that was purchased at the track, typical of what everyone was running 5-8yrs ago https://store.windingroad.com/motorola-cp200d-digital-long-track-communications-system-p2376.aspx .  From what I understand the latest trend is to purchase a bluetooth headset and adapters and use cell phones / tech instead of radios.  Range is better and cost in minimal compared to buying the typical setup like I did.

A couple of our tracks in the area have weak cell reception so I'm a little on the fence with this myself right now.  My old equipment doesn't reach the limits of some of the bigger tracks so ............ yeah.

Depending on what events you go to it might pay to use someone's equipment that is usually there.  It's why I purchased what I did and was glad I went this direction.  We've had a few issues over the years and it was nice having someone at the track that could quickly sort it out and sell us what we needed right away.

Now that we're going to be doing fewer SCCA events and more random track events I'm looking even closer at a cell phone based system.

@trakmnky

Thanks for the info.  Spring Mountain broadcasts to all racers on a radio frequency so I am pretty sure the blue tooth won't work but it is a great idea.

You might want to check with Spring Mountain on their broadcast details since digital radios have to be all programmed up and such. If they broadcast analog then a basic BaoFeng UV-82HP is a cheap analog radio that a lot of endurance racers I drive with use. Put the Nagoya long whip antenna on it and you have quite good range (my set I use for pit crew coordination tested out past 5 miles with the longer whip antennas). The BaoFeng also has the advantage of being dual band so you can tune in to both the Spring Mountain broadcast frequency plus the frequency your spotter or crew chief is using so you can listen to SM broadcast announcements while still having separate comms with your pit crew.
