After removing the sidepod on my SR3 i struggled to get it back on, so removed the radiator first and of course spilt coolant everywhere.

i now need to refill with coolant, but cannot find a procedure to do it correctly.

Is it as simple as just pouring into the swirl pot until full? Or do i now need to completey bleed the system first before refilling? The XX manual doesn't say anything about how to do this.

i've never done a coolant bleed ever, not even on a road car, so dont want to mess this up.

Also the manual recommends some Motul Inugel Optimal - and says i require 10.5Litres of it which seems liike a lot!

what are you guys using?

I use distilled water and 1/2 bottle of water wetter.  Anti-freeze if there is a chance of freezing temperatures.  Don't start the car, but turn on power.  Remove water temperature sensor which will cause the water pump to pump and bleed the system.  Fill swirl pot half full.

@davidf

many thanks.

ok, i ordered

- Motul Auto cool Optimal, premixed (was less hassle/just as cost effective as getting concentrate + distilled water)

- The concentrate of the above (they add 'ultra' to the title) - so i can create my own with jugs of distilled water i already have lying around.

- Waterwetter to use as an additive.

I went on a bit of a research journey with this - i was bothered initially by wanting to get antifreeze specifically for safe use with aluminium engines - so started looking for motorbike specific antifreeze. Then read the Waterwetter use instructions where its purpose is to inhibit any aluminium corrosive properties of the car antifreeze, amongst other things.

So i'll dump in the pre mix, add in the waterwetter, top up with my own mixture as necessary, and follow your instructions. cheers!

in the XX manual, they recommend "Motul Inugel optimal" - i think this must be an old name/old version and Motul have changed it to 'Auto cool optimal', because the technical datasheets of both on the Motul website are identical, with the Auto cool datasheet having a newer date printed on it at the bottom.

ok this feels like a dumb question but....where is the water temp sensor? i followed the lines to the swirl pot and off water pump...couldn't see anything obvious?

EDIT...Found it...on the engine block. The wire even has a label on it saying so... silly me.

I filled the swirl pot to the top (forgot to fill it to half way like you said) and let the pump run for about 2 minutes... saw the bubbling in the pot, turned it off. It remains full still (not overspilling) - is that ok or is there such a thing as overfilling it? Do i need to syphon some out now?

i ended up putting back in just under 5 litres.

@rojid ...  just under 5 litres sounds about right.

If I understand what you are saying you now have the swirl pot filled right to the top... completely full.  That's no good.

What I suggest you do is remove a bit of the coolant, to a point where the level is about 1" below the 'neck tube' (the opening in the top of the swirl pot that the cap seal goes down into).  So at that point the level will be about 2 or 2.5" below the completely full position.

Then 'pump' all the blue silicone hoses to/from the swirl pot and to/from the engine block. (do this by pinching them between your fingers and then letting them go quickly)  When you do this I suspect you will see a few more bubbles arise in the swirl pot and the swirl pot level will drop accordingly.

Once you've done that - simply top the level back up to be about 1" below the 'neck tube' again, screw the cap back on - job done.
