Good fun once I cleared the traffic! Bit damp all day so was a bit slippery.

BH GP does look like fun, though the speed differential unfortunately shows why a lot of track day organisers ban radicals - which is of course a huge shame. I've done a ton of hours at BH on the sim, but only done the indy in an SR3 IRL.

There was quite a lot of traffic. Who was this with? Goldtrack?

@mark44 Don't they have different run groups?  Many of the HPDE organizers here in the US have an open track group, a point by group and a beginner group.

Hi Phil,

The majority of days I've done here in the UK are general open pit lane track days, where there are no groups so you have all types of (closed wheel) cars in the mix.

AFAIK its primarily test days that running limited numbers of cars (or bikes) who group according to driver or car type. Although you get much more ability to stretch your legs with far fewer vehicles with similar performance, you certainly have to pay for the privilege. Your grouped sessions are far more limited (perhaps 4-6 x 20-25min stints) as opposed to the open pit lane events where you could theoretically be out all day. The cost of a grouped test day is probably 2-3 x times that of an open pit lane day with much less track time. Kind of a quantity vs quality equation.

This leads to the more premium days at the premier tracks attracting a mix of track day and supercar owners as well as various categories of race cars/drivers un-officially testing (which I think is accepted provided your not being a dick) as timing is also not permitted.

In recent years, many track days will just reject prototypes all together (or run specific days for them) - I think due to a policy change from the track owners themselves.  With the ones that don't you certainly have to be aware the organiser has got good marshalling in place. They should be quick to black flag any dangerous driving initially giving a caution - followed by kicking out a repeat offender.

Personally, I think provided drivers of quicker cars (e.g. radicals) are courteous to slower or less experienced drivers other drivers it can work and everyone can have a safe and enjoyable day.

Mark

Yes it was with gold track. As the day progresses the traffic gets less as people go out less. Interestingly, silverstone track days attract the quicker cars so traffic not so much a problem.

@andybarnes

Nice one. I'm a big fan of GoldTrack. Off to Silverstone with them next week. I think they must be doing pretty well as I tried to book a day with them not that long ago, and they were fully booked some time before the event.

It's remarkable how many people usually leave by lunch time!

Hopefully see you there sometime!
