Thought I’d start a threat with some in car video from my SR4.

This one is from last Friday, first solid day out after having my head done by Carpenter Racing.

Thunderbolt track at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Enjoy!

Would love to see some others...

Here is my race from Sunday.  I was happy with my qualifying position but got stuck behind the Aston Martin (more money than skill driver) and had to make some risky moves to get by that did not pay off.  Enjoy!!  Might need a SR8 🙂

G'day John,

Some close racing - good to watch.  That Aston Martin was a real cork in the bottle... until the cork fell out (...got pushed!) You have a lot better lap speed when not in traffic and were faster than most of those guys around you.

I have a question related to the video.  It seems like on a few occasions that you have some sort of rev limit set at 10k rpm's (examples where this can be seen are at 9:43, 10:02 and a really clear example at 23:03 when you sat it on whatever limiter is there for a little longer)

I'd be interested to know if there is such thing, and how that is implemented in the Life ECU (and is it adjustable, etc)

Any help appreciated! (.... and in my opinion you don't nee an SR8 yet...)

Rod

Dear Rod

Thanks, it was frustrating trying to pass the Aston.  We have a bunch of racers here that fall into the "more money than skill" category.  Fast on the straights and slow in the corners.  I have to work harder to pick my spots and makes it more challenging.  It is forcing me to become a better driver.  Glad you enjoyed it.

I am fairly new to the car and have not changed much since I received it.  I have focused more on getting better at driving.  The person I purchased the car from told me the standard rev limit was 10K and I have not spent much time playing or changing the video system.

I am sure the are more knowledgeable individuals then me on this subject.  Sorry!!

@rjbender - what you are seeing in the Smarty cam footage is just that the video overlay is set to max out at 10k RPM. If you could see the shift lights or read the revs on the dash they are still continuing to rise until John hits the limiter. In the video John hits the hard limiter in 2nd (which probably counts as an over-rev).

@gwt561324 - Thanks Garrett.  Understood re the video overlay.

You mention that John 'hits the hard limiter in 2nd' (which I think is at that 23:03 point in the video).

Sorry for another question, but if there is a 'hard limiter', is it adjustable?

In my ECU there is an 'Over Rev Engine Speed' listed (it is shown as 10,500rpm).  I have previously thought this was just the 'set-point' at which the ECU would count an occurrence of 'Over Rev' (either off load or on load), rather than anything to do with a 'limiter'

I'm not sure now if there is a limiter at all?  I wonder if what we can hear on the video is the engine running out of breath ('valve bouncing'?)... but there is definitely something happening that causes the engine revs to stop increasing very suddenly.

I haven't driven my car yet, so have no experience with this ECU/engine set-up... so I don't have a 'feel' for any of this yet.  The reason for my interest is that for the type of racing I will be doing, I would be more than happy (at the moment at least), to set the rev limit down to 10k rpm's to prevent unnecessary/unintentional engine damage on over-rev conditions.

Thanks to anyone in advance for any further insights into this...

Hi Rod (@rjbender),  it might be worth making this a separate post so others can find it in the future.  I  believe the ECUs are locked so I don’t think you can change the 10,500 rev limit.  Although a Radical dealer may be able to.  When you hit the rev limit the ECU will cut the ignition (and possibly fuel?).  It is however possible to exceed that limit by mis shifting or hitting the limit at too high a rate.  The integrated paddle shifting does a good job keeping you from making a shift that could damage the engine, but it is still possible.

Some things you can do is to adjust the shift lights on the aim dash or you can add a separate shift light and set it to a lower RPM.  On one of my cars I added a larger shift light and set it to 9300.  It was a really nice addition.

Charley

Thanks Charley (@charleyhradicalsportscarregistry-com)

Ive got a full coloured AiM MXG dash in my VW Golf R Hillclimb car (displays most ECU data via the OBDII Port - a great thing), so I’m familiar with the AiM dash set-up.  I’ll definitely take your idea and program the shift lights to warn me early enough. I’ll also look into if both/any of the Digital Out channels are used... one of these could easily be configured to drive a shift light on/off at programmed levels. Maybe that’s how you went about it?

Thanks for the idea to make this a separate post - not sure how to do that... can you let me know?
