I have just taken the data from the Life ECU at my car and I was quite astonished about the difference between run time and load time.

I understand that load time is taken above 3000 rpm. Run time at my car is three times the load hours. I cannot believe that the car was just idling and Standing for this huge amount of time but cannot find anywhere the definition of "run time". Are the times being recorded just when the crank turns or does it already record when the master switch is on?

Yes, this is very typical.  These cars have a lot of cooling capacity so the proper warm up sequence takes quite a while.

Thank You Charley,

my car has an electric pre heater for the oil, I guess the most cars have that. So even with this, it is necessary to run such a long time with the car standing?

Do I understand it right, that just turning the main switch on doesn't start the ECU already counting seconds?

Thanks

Alex

Alex, can you tell us more about the pre-heater? My SR8 doesn't have one, and I'd like to see how yours works.

John, mine is a little immersion coil integrated in the oil reservoir, operated by 220V external power  supply. I will try to post a picture later.

As water and oil temperature is such an issue, I am wondering if I also should integrate a pre-heater in my water circuit. I have put such a thing in my Caterham and that works perfectly.

What do you think? Has anyone in the forum done such thing already?

John when I checked into adding an oil heater to my car Spring Mountain recommended using a heater pad attached to the dry sump tank and they said you can also add one to the engine case.  I don’t recall the brand they used, but it is similar to this one.   https://www.amazon.com/Moroso-23996-Adhesive-External-Heating/dp/B000CON16E/ref=asc_df_B000CON16E/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312025890921&hvpos=1o6&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14942726571295031677&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008156&hvtargid=pla-761183374072&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=64728044760&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312025890921&hvpos=1o6&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14942726571295031677&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008156&hvtargid=pla-761183374072  They come in different sizes and wattages.

I have never heard so a way to heat the water.

Thanks Charley. I think Europeans have it a bit easier... we're limited to 120V here.

I may get one or two of those on order to see how they might fit...

John, I attach two pictures. One is the heater at the oil tank, the other is the water heater.

The oil heater was installed by the former owner of my car, but I can try to find a source.

The water heater I will try out on my Radical and I will make a seperate post, when I will have installed it on the SR3 with pictures and a source.

Oil Pre-Heaters are Wolverine so should be available in 110V.

On load time is above 3000rpm but also 25% throttle, every time you are below that (on the brakes) then it is not logging on load time. Later cars do it off wheel speed as well.

Rebuild hours are recommended on total running hours. Engine hours are only logged when the engine is running, NOT from when the master switch is turned on.

Thanks Alex -- I think I've got a spot for doing that on my SR8. The element must be like that of an electric hot water heater.
