On-board camera systems sure have come a long way.

To this... Quite an improvement (even better without the bug splatter) 😉

Lol!

I recently saw video from the mid 80’s from a helmet cam. The helmet had an old VCR camera attached to it.

I need to upgrade to the latest AiM Smartycam...

Definately!  The Smartycams are great.  I have really liked the GPHD.  It is small and once it is set up you don’t have to worry about it.  It starts by itself, it shuts off by itself and you don’t have to mess around with batteries.  On top of that there is great technical support available from guys like Matt.

Been in contact with Matt over the past few days.  He hurt my wallet  😋

I have a  new 84 degree FOV Smartycam on the way along with more sensors and such for my off road truck project.

I'm looking forward to having the ability to lay data over a video - I'm starting to get a feeling for the SR8 and would like the data and visual input to help me learn to drive it to my peak potential.

Congratulations!  The Smartycams are great!  Having data integrated with the video is great.  Looking at color maps between sessions are a great tool for recalibrating you brain to the downforce.

did you get the standard Smartycam or the GPHD?

Yes, I need the same capabilities. I spent last weekend getting re-acquainted with the car... but left gobs of lap-time out on the race track.

I've got a GoPro Hero 4 Black, AiM MXL Pista, and a MoTeC M150. Any chance of gathering such data from that motley collection of sources?

I’m replacing the old, big unit with the SCHD. No need for a remote camera.

Been working with Matt at Trailbrake getting my SCHD settings dialed in.  I figured out how to modify screen info, changed my tach to a correct RPM range, played with the brake and throttle settings but there's one thing that I'm having issues finding:  How do I set the parameters for starting to record?  I'd like the camera to start recording once it sees an input of, say, 10 MPH.  I've searched and have come up with squat.

I figure that we may as well share info like this in a thread so post away.

Thanks in advance.

i have a smartycam HD from my old car. Is it simple plug in and go? Unfortunately my car isn’t at my house and I didn’t check it my first time out.  Not a bad thing, I’d be watching myself stalling a lot. Lol

John @projecthex, it takes a little work when you first set it up, but after it is set up it does everything automatically (start, stop, charge, etc).  To hook up the camera you will need an Aim extension cord.  The cord plugs into the back of the Aim dash using the plug that is occupied by the cord to the IR sensor (on the nose of the car). If you want to use the IR sensor and the Smartycam you will need a hub.  Once the camera is connected to the dash you need to hook up a laptop and configure the inputs.  If you need parts or guidance contact Matt at Trailbrake.net and he will take good care of you.

Charley do you know if the old plug for the boxy looking camera is the same as the newer ones? My car has the old camera from factory.  Was hoping it’s the same cord end and I can just plug new smartycam into existing wire.  Thank you again!

well we'll be finding out how the SCHDs work!  I think I have it configured properly.

I got tired of manually merging data and video in a third party software.

I believe it is the same cable, but I am not 100% sure.  Matt @trailbrake would know for sure.

I believe you will be really happy with it.  It is really nice having the data and video automatically.

The old gray longer cameras and the newest generation of box style camera have a 7 pin connector.  The original SCHD had a 5 pin connector. I'd suggest making sure whatever connector at the camera end is correct for your new camera.
