So I’ve popped the back casing off my JFR and it definitely has that 3mm washer before the inner race on the layshaft. On your 1st picture Josh, I can’t see the washer, so it’s either been left out or it could be on the other end of the shaft.

Looks like I need some new bearings myself, the inner race is completely knackered 🙈

I’ve also noticed on the ftr manual that is says you might have to modify the spacer on assembly.

Something else I remembered. I’m pretty sure the reason for changing the gear ratio settings in the gcu is so it can determine when it will allow/disallow a downshift based on rpm as to not over rev the engine. If you don’t change these, it shouldn’t cause any damage to the box, but it could potentially damage your engine.

@alex-heavens

Yes, my MoTeC setup does exactly that -- calculates the new engine speed based on current speed, braking decel, and gear ratios. If downshifting would overrev the engine, the downshift isn't allowed.

@jwb

Did you manage to get this problem sorted? Did you find out what the cause was in the end?

@alex-heavens it looks as if the gear valve block was the problem so we replaced it and the shifting seems to be a lot smoother. We think this could have been causing the gear damage. I also purchased the Hewland tool to remove the gear cluster so we will check the gears after every race

@jwb

Can you tell us more about this tool? I've got a Hewland JFR in my SR8 and that tool sounds like a good idea for me as well.

@parsonsj sorry I have not been on the forum for a while. The tool is available from. Hewland or from Radical and allows you to remove the gear cluster.

@alex-heavens thanks for the valuable information!! We have been out of action as we rebuilt the engine, strengthened the chassis and did the bodywork. We will go through the gearbox and check the spacer. I really appreciate all the help

@jwb No problem Josh. Another thing to look out for which has happened on a few JFR’s is a crack in the maincase between the pinion bearing and lay-shaft bearing, although I don’t know if FTR casings ever suffer from this, still worth a check.

@alex-heavens here is an article with a photo I found. It was Austin Reynolds as far as I can see

@jwb The link doesn’t seem to have appeared. But it doesn’t matter, it is the car I thought it was. Bizarrely I met a chap today who probably worked on your car at that time, which I think would be 2006/7 👍
