Has anyone ever has their Radical get stuck in gear? My 2012 SR3 (1340) is stuck in second gear....

Was on track coming out of a slow 2nd gear corner - accelerated out of the corner towards redline, pulled the paddle to upshift to 3rd and it would not shift.  Stayed in second.

Obviously slowed down and tried again a few times - nothing - stayed in 2nd.

This was on my 12th or 13th lap of the session and the car felt completely normal prior to this occurring.

Drove it into the pits in 2nd gear and the car drives fine in 2nd gear - no odd noises, completely normal.

Stopped in the pits and tried to downshift to 1st - nothing - stayed in second.

The data shows the car was calling for the shift.  The shift actuator rod is the proper length - the shift actuator bushing was changed (shop thought maybe it was worn) - no change.  The compressor runs to fill the air tank and holds air properly. The shift "noise" is normal (the air sound when you pull the paddle) - shift rod moves.

Being investigated more now by the shop but I wondered if anyone has had this occur to them and what the diagnosis was?

I have a 2022 Radical SR3 XX and had same issue.  It turned out to be the paddle shifter on the steering wheel was not making contact to initiate the shift.  It was a simple fix at trackside.  Took the screws off the paddle shifter and added a thin piece of paper to the back of the contact points to narrow the gap about 2mm so when the shifter was pulled contact was made.  Have not had the problem again.  Hope this helps.

I appreciate the quick reply - both paddle shifters still work - the actuator rod is moving - it's like it is not moving enough to initiate the gear change but it's trying....so, the signal from the paddle to make the car want to shift is working.

@jasonfreed, have you looked at the shift actuator to see if one of the bearings has failed?  It may be that the actuator is moving, but with a bearing failure it can’t move enough to shift gears.

Yes, they (Team Stradale) replaced it thinking that exact same thing - did not fix the problem (and I actually inspected the old bearing and it seemed to be in good condition).

Check the aluminum arm to make sure it's still tight on the shaft coming out of the motor, also, manually force this back and forth to see if you can get it to change gear by hand.

and....they took off the actuator rod and are unable to shift it by hand so they think something is broken in the transmission.

Apparently, the engine is coming out.......

It's just so odd that the car runs and drives completely normal in 2nd gear - no odd noises.

I drove it off the track and they drove it to the shop.

@jasonfreed,  I am sorry to hear this,  but they are actually saving you quite a bit of money.  Shifting problems often turn into catastrophic engine failure with parts exiting the crankcase in undesirable ways.  How many hours do you have on your engine?

@jasonfreed .. G’day Jason, sorry to hear engine is coming out, but it could be much worse!… please remember to share whatever they find inside with us. I’ll be keen to learn what can cause this.

We shall see what they find - has ~30 hours on it.

BUT, when I bought it used, Stradale first told me it was due for a rebuild, then somehow figured out it only had 10 hours on a rebuild - I've put another 20 hours on it.  I was not 100% sure their records were accurate.

I will absolutely post a follow-up once it is opened and a diagnosis is made.

Shop was too busy to get to my car as soon as I wanted....so.....a friend and I pulled the motor to diagnose rather than sitting around waiting for a shop to do what I am capable of doing.

Found a broken dog on 5th gear (driven) and a tooth and half broken on 1st gear (driven).

Disassembled the entire transmission and will replace anything worn or broken.

Bearings look good.

motor out
broken2
broken1

@jasonfreed

Radical should and normally fit an aftermarket 'heavy duty' replacement 5th & 6th output gears as this is a known problem.

I would recommend that you do the same as an OEM gear is likely to suffer the same issue again in the future.

I can't seem to find any heavy duty gear options.....I've found a bunch of places that sell stock stuff which is what I was planning to replace with.

But, I'm interested in something better if anyone knows of a source.

All of the parts in the trans are stock hayabusa parts - nothing Radical specific in the transmission that I can see.
