I have encountered a problem when the car is hot and I shut it off it won't restart.  Turns over very slow and voltage drops to around 9.5v on the dash.  Let the car cool off and it starts right up.  Brand new battery in the offseason.  I am using a Caltric brand starter not the OEM Suzuki.  Has anyone experienced a similar problem?  Ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Seems pretty obvious that you've got a heat-soaked starter. You can try wrapping it in some sort of heat shielding material (DEI makes something designed for starters), but I think you'll end up replacing the starter.

(@ntf3000),  Remind me which chassis number car you have and what engine size?  Do you have a 12v or a 24v starting system?  If you have a 24v system it could be that one of your batteries is dying.  If you have a 1500cc engine with a 12v system it could be that your battery just doesn't have enough cranking amps, which is why most of the 1500's have 24v starting systems.  It is also possible that your starter isn't as efficient as the factory starter (just a guess).

One thing that really helps with Hot restarts is to turn the master power switch off for a second and then back on before starting.  This puts the system in "cold start" mode and the engines start easier.  It sounds like you are having electrical challenges, but using Cold start could help a bit.

As always, Charley and John have great suggestions and I think they're correct.

I also wanted to add for others having problems starting, if you have less than 12v indicated before hitting the starting button you'll have problems even if it does turn over.  As a best practice I always wait until the compressor stops running before starting the car.  This ensures the starter and ECU have all the power the system can deliver.

Thanks Charley,

I have a 2017 SR3 1340. I don’t know the chassis number off hand. The car has a 12v system. I will definitely try turning the master power off as I have heard that tip for other situations.  I have another new “cheap” starter I can try.  Starter wrap is also a good idea.  Does anybody use heat wrap on the battery?  My old battery was bubbled up in the upper right corner.

@trakmnky

Good tip. I would be interested in what others see on the volt meter when starting. I double checked the main grounds and everything looks good and tight.
