Has anybody tried a wireless tire pressure/temp system? I am wondering if I will miss tire pressure info.

I'm familiar with Stack's TPMS system. It works well with plenty of tailoring options, but I'm not sure about data logging.

I was planning to add this system: https://trailbrake.com/tire-tpms/   Pretty cheap and seems easy to install, however, I was told the MXL2 layout is locked and cannot be modified without getting the unlocked template from Radical.  I left it there because there were a lot of other higher priority things the car needed at the time, but agree it would be a tremendous help to those of us that don't have a pit crew at the track.

What speed are they rated for?  Looks like they're using them on rubber stems too.  

I use a similar system on my trailer.  Last long pull I made, I lost two tires to leaking valve stems caused by this type of sensor.  The mfg claimed the type I was using were fine with standard rubbers stems as well.  The stress on that stem at 70mph is a lot, at 140ish is an entirely different matter.  

Problem was, I only had one spare and an extra tire.  Moving forward I have two full spares at all times now and have moved to steel stems.  

If nothing else maybe I'll save someone from falling into the single spare trap.  Pulling a race trailer since 2007 and have had 2 times where I needed both.

The guy who owns trailbrake, Matt Romanowski, is on this forum sometimes so maybe he can answer your question based on his customer experiences.  They do offer both internal and external versions though so it shouldn't be a show stopper.

This does look promising! I'd love to hear from Matt about this system. CANbus data is perfect. I'm wondering about PID programming flexibility and tire temp support.

Hey Guys! I am the one with an inexpensive TPMS systems. Some basics on it - it logs at 1 Hz, the CAN protocol is not capable of being changed. I've used the external systems at Daytona at 180 mph without trouble and we run them 150+ mph at Watkins Glen, Road America, Homestead, etc. I've run them on my slow 914 for a few years at 130mph all over without trouble. People have run them off road on Baja trucks, short course off road, motorcycles, and all kinds of stuff. The systems only work with 4 sensors and it's not a quick thing to link them to the new sensors. 

 

The internal and external sensors provide the same data - pressure, internal air temp, and battery voltage. Resolution is about .6psi, but they are accurate. With the external sensors I suggest changing the batteries every event, but you can probably get away with less often. For the $2 total in batteries, it's easy enough to change. 

I have the XC1 files for AiM, MoTeC files, AEM info, and written protocol if someone is using it with something else. I know customers have used it with Race Technologies and some other sytems.

Thanks Matt,

I try to keep a new set of spare tires on hand at an event in case of flat spots/punctures, etc.

Or if I want to blame worn tires for lousy lap times, lol.

Is there a way to run sensors in both sets of tires and swap them out if necessary? I'd be logging data via my ECUMaster PMU (which has really nice CAN programmability).

If people want 2 sets of tires and the internal sensors, the easiest and most popular option has been to buy 2 setups and swap the control box when they swap wheels. It has a connector on it and that is pretty easy to do. The external setup is just moving the sensors.

Since the CAN IDs are not able to be changed, there are some people that run 2 setups all the time with them on separate CAN networks. This works well, but isn't always possible depending on the logger and setup.
