Hi,

I’m reversing the shifting direction so pullingthe lever rearward is an upshift. Unfortunately, moving the shift rod to above the bell crank means that the rod hits the engine.

There are several possible solutions, but the easiest one would be to lengthen the gearshift that attaches to the transmission. I was just wondering if anyone knew of an available part that might already be available.

Thanks in advance!

Larry

Hi Lary (@lwsr3), did you see this post?  It appears that Radical made shifters that operated both ways.  It depends where the pivot point on the shifter is compared to the push rod.  You can likely buy or make the parts to make the change.  I don’t know if Radical still makes them but with a little digging you can likely find what you need.

Thank you. Didn’t see that. Yeah I could see changing the pivot on the shift rod in the cockpit. I have a bell crank that bolts to the firewall with positions above and below the pivot. My issue is the shift rod doesn’t clear when in the above position.

I think the easiest way will be to slightly lengthen the crank that bolts to the engine shift shaft. Shouldn’t be a big deal, but I’ve said that many times, lol.

@lwsr3, or perhaps you could fabricate an offset or Z shaped rod?  The trick would be to make it stiff enough so it wouldn’t flex when shifting.

@lwsr3, I have an extra linkage rod that you can have if you want to try cutting one up an rewelding it in another shape, or bending it.  The one that I have is the long one from an SR3 that goes from the shifter to the bell crank. If you want it you can have it for the cost of shipping.

Hey thanks Charlie. Okay, I have to eat some humble pie here.... I got under there once again to make sure I had the right dimensions. And then while playing around that if I put the rod on the other side of the bell cranks, I could get enough room to make it clear. Holy smokes do I feel dumb.

Thanks for the ideas!

McMaster Carr sells pre threaded lengths of aluminum rod and heim joints that work nicely for fabbing up a shift linkage. quite reasonable prices also!
