I curious what every bodies favorite helmet is. I tried a couple on but am still undecided. I really liked the Stilo ST5 but their carbon version is 2k which is a bit rich for me. I tried the Bell GTX3 and the visibility seemed restricted but maybe I’d get used to it. I am also very interested in the Zamp RZ-64c which is a value play but looks really nice. I haven’t talked to anybody that’s using one.

I have and love the Stilo ST5, fits my head very well.  Been wearing driving my Porsche race car for several years.  I did recently buy the two Stilo air diffusers for front chin and rear top for my new car which will have inaugural weekend at Cota starting Sat.

Also, forgot, I really like the Stilo because I wear prescription glasses while driving and they are very easy to put on with flexible titanium frame and still give good peripheral vision.

I use the Stilo Composite ST5. Much less expensive than the carbon version with the same great fit, aero properties, and built-in headset.

Are you guys adding a chin spoiler or rear spoiler to the ST5? Any helmet lift or is it good stock?

I run mine stock. I've seen others add extra aero to Stilos, so you might have a different result than me. It can take some extra effort to straighten my head if I'm looking left or right at high speeds.

Ben,

I was concerned about the the smaller viewport on my Bell GTX3 too.  It's never been an issue and I actually prefer it now.

I currently use the Arai GP5 and have a few years left on it. However, always a good idea to have a second helmet so I have been shopping the Stilo ST5 also. Haven't tried one on yet to ensure a proper fit, but everything about it seems like a solid option.

I am running the add-on aero parts on my Arai GP5 and it makes a pretty noticeable difference in keeping my helmet down on my head.

I have had really good luck with Bell Helmets.  My current helmet is the GP3 Carbon and I really like it.  You mentioned that the Bell helmet that you looked at seemed to have limited visibility, but you will find that the higher end automotive helmets have relatively small eye ports for added protection.  Motorcycle helmets tend to have large eye ports to provide a wide field of view but auto racing helmets have smaller eye ports because there is a higher probability that you could be hit by a flying part.  The view in a race car while you are wearing a HANS device doesn't benefit from having a large eye port and they just increase the risk to you.  I wear prescription glasses while driving and I don't have any problem putting them on with my GP3.

I have also found that using tear offs does a great job of protecting your face shield from tack debris damage.  I didn't use them on my previous helmet and the face shields look like they have been shot by a shotgun. 🙂  I also added clear bra to the front of my helmet to protect it from track debris and it has helped a lot.

I used the Bell GTX3 and loved it.  I recently purchased the Roux R-1CF Carbon Fiber.  It is being discontinued so I got a great deal.  It has lots of features (built in mic/ear phone, water cooled).  Only drawback is that I get some helmet lift.  I may remove the top air scoop this weekend to see if it makes a difference.

I wish the BELL would fit my head. Just haven't found one that agrees with the shape of my skull.

@tommymills, yes, fit is the most important thing when searching for helmets.  No helmet fits everyone well, so the only way to know which one is best for each of us is to try them on 🙂

I use Stilo ST5 Composite without any aero.  No problems with wind, and I don't even notice it when driving under high loads.  I love this helmet. I also use a headset for radio communications.

A snug fit is essential for any helmet.

Got in 2 sessions before it started raining today and generated a few more questions and comments. I definitely need to get an aero helmet because on long straights it wants to rip off. I also amazed at how loud this car is. My ears ring like crazy if I don’t wear earplugs. The only problem with earplugs is that I would like to hear the coaching from my Garmin catalyst. I thought my Bluetooth AirPods would be a solution with the active noise cancellation. The only problem is that the AirPods don’t stay in my ears well after putting on the helmet and are not nearly as effective as earplugs.

1. has anybody experimented with a solution for protecting your ears while hearing a radio or voice intercom?

2. Does anyone make Bluetooth speakers for a helmet?

3. Do certain helmets reduce noise more than others?

thx much in advance

@cirrusdriver, what exhaust do you have, and what helmet do you have?

The most effective way to reduce helmet lift is to add a gurney flap to the front of the cockpit.  They only stick up about an inch but they make a BIG difference, by diverting the airflow over your head.  Spring Mountain sells them and they aren’t very expensive.  You can also make one out of Lexan from Home Depot.
