What is the most logical camera/data logging system for a 2007 SR3? My car came with a (broken) Aim Solo and a camera mount with no camera, so I'm pretty much starting from scratch.
From what I've been reading today it sounds like the older dash doesn't really provide for any data sources so the only thing I could read from the car would be RPM? Is that all I can really do with a 1st gen car?
Is there a camera/data system available that doesn't break the bank?
@gobble, what is wrong with the Aim Solo in your car? You might want to reach out to Matt (forum member @trailbrake) to see what can be done. He is our resident Aim dealer and is very helpful. You should be able to get your Solo fixed for a reasonable price. As far as cameras go, the Aim Cameras are great When you can connect them to an AIM dash or Solo.
You can often find used cameras for a reasonable price.
It's stuck in an endless boot cycle. I've been talking with Peter Krause and he said it needs to be sent in for repair. I'm not sure yet if it's worth fixing.
Can I easily upgrade the dash in the gen 1 cars? Or would I be looking at that big wire harness project in the other thread here?
I know the Harry's phone app timer has some camera integration, but it may be simplistic compared to the Aim system. It's hard to find any good information about it.
Have you tried calling the Aim Service center yet? They are located In Southern California and their phone number is (951) 674-9090. They have been very helpful in the past. There is another service center on the east coast but I don’t have that number. I would check with them to see if they recommend fixing it.
i am not sure what it would take to ad a dash but I will ask some friends.
I would be cautious about using camera systems that are not designed for automotive use. I used a camera made by Contour for many years in my Corvette but due to the high vibration in the Radical the files always got corrupted.
Do you have a system in the car now or just gauges?
I thought most radicals had a MXL Pista from the factory, but if you don't have that, it's not a bad project. The dash comes with an 18" harness that would have the wires for RPM and power in it. Then for sensors, you buy patch cables and run the wires. For that part, it's really not hard - the hardest part is usually putting the sensor in!
Post up any questions you have or feel free to email me at matt@trailbrake.net or call/text 603-674-3250
@Gobble Matt can really help you get this fixed. I've wired two different AiM dashes with Matt's help: an MXL Pista and an MXS Strada with Strada logger. Connecting the ECM CAN bus data in a 2008 MY to any AiM dash should be simple: 5 wires: power, ground, CAN+, CAN-, and RPM. And RPM is optional, since you can get RPM from the CAN bus.
Radical provides a connector under the dash with all those signals. You just need a couple of Deutsch connectors to hook it all up.
Add your Solo, or a GPS08, and you'll get your speeds, g-forces, and map data too.
I did just speak with Matt. The different dash sounds interesting but I believe I'm missing the CAN connection with a 2007 car that doesn't have the Life ECU? Otherwise, it would sure be a fun project to hook something like that up. I think maybe it can be done but mostly with analog sensors
