Hey I opened my muffler to check the packing and possibly repacking it. This is what it looks like. Are there pieces missing inside? How does one add the packing? I need it quieter for the local Waterford Hill road course.

Thanks!

Larry

@lwsr3

You're missing the inner core of the muffler. It's a tube that connects the two ends of the muffler and has dozens of perforations. The muffler packing goes in the space between the inner tube and the housing.  You can see them in the picture below:

@lwsr3, if you are planning to go to tracks with tight sound restrictions you can one of the quiet mufflers that Radical makes.  Many people call them “Laguna mufflers”. I have an extra one that I wouls]d sell if you are interested.

I'm looking to repack my muffler as well.  Inside packing is completely gone.  Does anyone have a preference of fiberglass vs stainless wool?

I ran at Laguna Seca and had to make a super trapp tip.  It sucks power but I don't have to worry about lifting.  I ran 8 plates but will add more next time to see if I can get a little more out of it.

@ajiman, I don't know which would be better, but I have been able to run Laguna Seca with a Radical quiet muffler with a 90 degree bend.  Also if you add fuel cell foam in the inlet it will lower your db by a few.

Thanks, fuel cell foam is a good idea in case supertrapp fails. No issues with power?

I'm reviving this old thread.

i'm now looking to repack my muffler and would be good to know what i'm getting myself into.

there's 1 particular circuit in the UK where i have to pass a static noise test of 101db. Don't know what the car is like at the moment, but i want to do everything i can first before going down a route of modified exhausts.

I asked on the facebook group about 'quiet cans' and the small consensus was they should not be used as the back pressure will cause harm to the engine. Then again i know that the team which prepped the car for me use supertrapps at brands hatch....  so i don't know what the science is on this. I've contacted Radical technical support on it - need to chase them.

In the mean time - what materials do i need to repack? is it just the roll of wadding, or do i need wool and other bits?

i have a twin muffler setup on mine - RSX exhaust with the 'long' quiet silencer as well as the short one in the middle.

The long muffler appears to be bolted on with a bracket, with the inlet side spring-tied and the outlet hex-bolted on - so looks reasonably straightforward to remove.

What will i find inside? and what do i need to buy?

i was just going to get this below, is that all i need?
